Chesapeake and Ohio NHP: Nolands Ferry and Point of Rocks

Chesapeake and Ohio NHP: Nolands Ferry and Point of Rocks

TUSCARORA and POINT OF ROCKS, Md. โ€” Nolands Ferry was a well-established crossing on the Potomac River, even before the United States was a nation. The location connected a main north/south route for settlers that became known as the Carolina Road. Thomas Jefferson crossed the Potomac at this location on May 10, 1776, as he traveled to Philadelphia to sign the Declaration of Independence. It was a busy hub and the site of several Revolutionary War crossings by both the colonists and the British. The ferry site included a country store, wagon shop, shoemaker, tailor, and blacksmith shop, and the Licksville slave market was also located nearby. Today, the sandstone abutments of the bridge built to carry traffic over the Canal to the ferry in 1848 are still visible.

Located south of Frederick, Md., Point of Rocks has been a transportation crossroads for both the B&O Railroad and C&O Canal which both arrived in the mid-1800s. During the canal era of the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, Point of Rocks was a vibrant town with hotels, restaurants, mills, and stores. The canal terminated operations in 1924, leading to the decline of Point of Rocks. Today, the original village area is a park and a parking lot for railroad commuters.

Monocacy National Battlefield

Monocacy National Battlefield

FREDERICK, Md. โ€” The weather was cloudy and a bit chilly, but it was a great day to be outdoors exploring the Monocacy National Battlefield Park.ย

On July 9, 1864, Federal soldiers, although outnumbered three to one, fought gallantly along the banks of the Monocacy River to buy time for Union reinforcements to arrive in Washington, DC to defend the city from advancing Confederate forces. Because of their actions, the Battle of Monocacy is known as the โ€œBattle that Saved Washington.โ€

Designated as a National Military Park by Congress in 1934, the park officially opened to the public in 1991.

Sermon Notes for "The Foundational Stones of the Church"

Speaker: Reverend Dr. Weaver Blondin, Senior Pastor, Mt Moriah Missionary Baptist Church of Winter Park, Florida

Key Scripture: I Thessalonians 1:2-3

Sermon Date: Sunday 01-14-2024

Address: 6531, Little Ox Road, Fairwood Acres, Donovans Corner, Fairfax County, Virginia, 22039, United States

The Church at Thessalonica was new, but Paul recognized their great works. Paul's letter to them was about production. He encouraged them to rely on the foundational stones of Faith, Love, and Hope as they executed their works. Paul spoke about the love for God and love for man.ย

  • Faith (works) - the basis of everything; it is blind belief
  • Love (labors) - tied to Christ on the cross at Calvary
  • Hope (enduring) - faith directed into the future; hope flows from trust.ย

Trust is the foundation for all of these.

Does your faith work? Does your love labor? Is your hope patient?
